WATCH: Trump makes statement about shutdown, U.S.-Mexico border

On day 29 of the partial government shutdown, President Donald Trump offered temporary legislative relief for people who were brought to the country as children and for people fleeing persecution, while asking for the same $5.7 billion wall that provoked the impasse.

The announcement was scheduled for 4 p.m. ET and is available in the player above.

Trump said he would extend protections for 700,000 dreamers, those brought in when they were children, and for people with temporary protected status, those seeking asylum. He also proposed spending $805 million on drug detection technology at the border and $800 million for humanitarian assistance.

But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had already rejected the proposal before he started speaking, calling it a compilation of previously rejected offers.

Triggered by demands from Trump for a $5.7 billion wall along more than 200 miles of the border and the Democrats declining to fully fund it, the partial shutdown has left 800,000 federal workers without pay since Dec. 22.
