He and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo spoke to the press at the scene where 108 people were injured Thursday morning, shortly before 9 a.m. EDT. Christie said a majority of the injuries happened to people aboard the train, though a woman was killed while standing on the platform. This is the sole fatality from incident, and Christie said there’s no reason to believe more will occur. Cuomo added the New Jersey Transit train entered the station going too fast, but the reason why remained unclear. Nancy Solomon of New Jersey Public Radio and WNYC told NPR that the Pascack Valley train did not stop once it reached the end of the platform in Hoboken. It traveled “all the way into the station — not into the waiting room but into the outdoor part where people transfer,” she said. Solomon added that part of the station’s roof had collapsed in the accident. There are structural concerns about the facility,” the official said. Federal Railroad Administration investigators are at the scene of the crash, and the National Transportation Safety Board is also sending a team to investigate. Police blocked off an area of several blocks surrounding the station. Derek Petrucci, who lives in Dumont, New Jersey, and works at an office two blocks away from the Hoboken station, told the NewsHour that the area surrounding the station felt like a “ghost town” on Thursday. “Everybody’s on edge,” he said. Hoboken is a major transfer point for commuters in the tri-state area, with more than 15,000 people using the station each weekday for New Jersey Transit. Approximately 28,000 people each weekday use the station to board the PATH train.
