What does it take to ensure a child succeeds in school and makes it to high school graduation? There may be as many answers to the question as there are students. On Saturday, PBS is dedicating the day to telling the stories of local leaders, teachers, students and others who are finding those answers in schools across the country everyday. One of those local leaders is Samir Madden, a University of Arizona student who is also president of the International Child Amputee Network. An amputee himself, Madden tells other kids who might face bullying and isolation, “You’re different, but that’s OK. It’s great that you’re different because you’re contributing.” In the tiny town of Cody, Nebraska, community members came up with an unorthodox solution to draw more students into their schools. A student-built grocery store that helps attract and keep families in town.
