Ernest Miller Hemingway born on July 21 to Dr. Clarence and Grace Hall Hemingway in Oak Park, Illinois.

1917

Graduates high school and in October begins reporting for the KANSAS CITY STAR. Joins the 7th Missouri Infantry, a temporary unit of the Missouri National Guard.

1918

Leaves for Italy and World War I. Serves as an ambulance driver for American Red Cross. Seriously wounded in the leg by a trench mortar shell explosion. While recuperating, he has an affair with nurse Agnes von Kurowsky; this relationship provides inspiration for A FAREWELL TO ARMS.

Becomes a reporter for the TORONTO STAR.

Marries Hadley Richardson. The newlyweds move to Paris.
