Walsh and former mayor Thomas M. Menino during a memorial service in tribute of the victims of last year’s bombings. Speeches are scheduled to begin at noon, EDT. It has been one year since tragedy struck at the 117th Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013. Vice President Joe Biden joins Governor Deval Patrick, Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh and former mayor Thomas M. Menino to give speeches to honor the victims. Earlier, families of the victims gathered Tuesday morning at the site of the explosions to attend a wreath-laying ceremony. The brief and quiet ceremony paid tribute to three who died, the MIT police officer killed in the aftermath and more than 260 who were injured last year. Photo by Jared Wickerham/Getty Images President Barack Obama also released a statement on the anniversary: “Today, we recognize the incredible courage and leadership of so many Bostonians in the wake of unspeakable tragedy. And we offer our deepest gratitude to the courageous firefighters, police officers, medical professionals, runners and spectators who, in an instant, displayed the spirit Boston was built on — perseverance, freedom and love.” Tuesday’s speeches will be followed by a flag-raising ceremony and a moment of silence at the finish line at 2:30 p.m. EDT.
