So long, SkyMall, and thanks for all the massage pillows

Today, we mourn the passing of another glossy giant. Xhibit Corporations, the company behind SkyMall LLC, filed for bankruptcy Thursday. The in-flight magazine peddled essentials focused on life-improvement, which included LED-illuminated ziplines and hooded raincoats for pugs .

No longer will we be able to flip through delightful images of dogs given easy access to new heights during the in-flight safety procedures speech. No longer will our transatlantic hours be spent in bemused awe that if we really wanted to, we could be the proud owner of a Dr. Who Tardis onesie pajamas.

In its glory days, SkyMall was “the sole in-flight option for potential purchasers of products to review while traveling,” the filing wistfully recalls. Now that the FAA allows cell phones, tablets and laptops during takeoff and landing, there is no longer a sole option for in-flight shopping. The SkyMall monopoly has come to an end.

The technology changes coupled with the cost of printing a physical magazine “made the traditional in-flight SkyMall catalog increasingly unattractive to the airlines,” according to the filing.

“We are extremely disappointed in this result and are hopeful that SkyMall and the iconic ‘SkyMall’ brand find a home to continue to operate as SkyMall has for the last 25 years,” said Scott Wiley, CFO and Acting CEO of Xhibit.

Xhibit is seeking approval for a bankruptcy court-supervised sale of its assets, according to the court filing, so there is a glimmer of hope. If the company is purchased, we can only hope that the future owner will proudly continue to offer invaluable items like adult jumping balls and pina colada-scented t-shirts.
